We focus on insurance products for the self-storage industry but are rapidly expanding our suite of services. We believe traditional commercial insurance can be distributed faster and cheaper. To do that, we’ve brought the entire insurance value chain—distribution, underwriting, and reinsurance—under one roof to drive innovation in an industry that’s ripe for change.

Our underwriting team is growing! We are hiring a Senior Underwriter who will lend their precision and expertise to our risk assessment and underwriting strategy.

About The Role

_ To drive our mission forward, this role will: _

• Lead underwriting excellence : Assess and underwrite surplus commercial property insurance policies, adhering to our high standards and guidelines

• Master risk analysis : Evaluate complex risk factors to determine optimal pricing and coverage terms that fuel growth without compromising stability

• Collaborate strategically : Partner with Sales, Ops, and Product teams to craft underwriting strategies

• Stay ahead of the curve : Monitor industry regulations, market trends, and emerging risks to keep SafeLease at the forefront

• Refine processes : Develop and enhance underwriting policies and workflows that scale seamlessly with our rapid growth

• Mentor and guide : Provide leadership and mentorship to junior underwriters, offering insights on complex risk assessments and fostering a culture of excellence

• Ensure compliance : Uphold regulatory and company standards, maintaining audit-ready documentation and coordinating with partners to align on compliance requirements

About You

You’re a seasoned underwriting expert with a knack for balancing risk and opportunity. You bring clarity to complexity and influence those around you with your professionalism and drive.

_ You’ll bring these skills and strengths: _

• 7+ years of experience in a commercial P&C insurance environment and/or 5+ years of property underwriting experience. Prior surplus lines experience is a big plus

• Deep expertise in risk assessment methodologies, pricing models, and coverage structures

• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail and a strategic mindset

• Strong negotiation and relationship management abilities, fostering trust with internal teams and external partners

• Proactive leadership with a collaborative spirit—you know when to take charge and when to empower others

• Comfort navigating state-by-state regulations and licensing processes, ensuring compliance at every turn

• Desire to work in an in-person or hybrid from our beautiful downtown Austin office
